● The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to observe the International Day of Human Space Flight on 12 April, 2011.

● Indian archaeologist and ancient historian Rakhaldas Banerjee was born on April 12, 1885 in Murshidabad, Bengal.
● After elementary education, he did M.A. in History from Presidency College, Calcutta.
● During studies, he came in contact with Harprasad Shastri, Bangla writer Ramendrasundar Tripathi and Archaeological Superintendent of Bengal Circle, Dr. Block, and Rakhaldas Banerjee's interest in history and archeology was ingnited in their company. From the time of college, he started working in explorations and excavations.
● In view of the attachment to history, the responsibility of preparing the catalog of the Provincial Museum and Lucknow was handed over to him. While doing this, he studied history well and started writing articles on history.
● In the year 1910, he passed the examination of Master's degree. After this he was promoted to the post of Excavation Assistant (Archaeological Survey of India).
● In the year 1917, Rakhaldas Banerjee was appointed as Superintendent of the Western Division of the Archaeological Survey of India at Poona (now Pune).
● Later, he visited the princely states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Sindh (now Punjab), Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, during which Rakhaldas Banerjee did many things. The details of his important works are still available in the 'Annual Reports of the Archaeological Survey of India'.
● He excavated at Bhumra in Madhya Pradesh and discovered ancient Gupta era temple and medieval Haihay-Kalchuri monuments.
● In the year 1922, Rakhaldas Banerjee was doing research on a Buddhist stupa, during excavation of which he discovered the ancient civilization of Mohenjodaro.
● Mohenjodaro was named as World Heritage Site (number 138) in the year 1980.
● In the year 1924, Rakhaldas Banerjee was transferred to the Eastern Division of the Archaeological Survey, Calcutta, where he remained for about two years. In this short span, he got the ancient temple of Paharpur excavated remarkably.
● Banerjee had to retire from government service in the year 1926 due to some administrative reasons.
● He was appointed to the post of 'Manindra Nandi Professor' of Ancient Indian History in 'Banaras Hindu University' and remained on this post till his death.

● Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was born on April 11, 1827 in present-day Maharashtra.
● In the year 1841, Phule was admitted to the Scottish Missionary High School (Pune), where he completed his education.
● His ideology was completely based on freedom and socialism.
● Major works – Gulamgiri (1873), Tritiya Ratna (1855), Powada: Chhatrapati Shivajiraj Bhonsle Yancha (1869), Shaktarayach Asud (1881) etc.
● Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was influenced by Thomas Paine's book 'The Rights of Man' and believed that the only way to combat social evils was to educate women and lower class people.
● Phule along with his followers formed the Satyashodhak Samaj in the year 1873, which means - 'Seekers of Truth' so that the lower classes in Maharashtra could get equal social and economic benefits.
● On May 11, 1888, he was honored with the title of 'Mahatma' by Vithalrao Krishnaji Vandekar, a social worker from Maharashtra.
● In the year 1848, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule taught his wife (Savitribai) to read and write, after which the couple opened the first indigenously run school for girls in Pune, where they both worked as teachers.
● He believed in gender equality and followed his beliefs by involving his wife in all his social reform activities.
● Mahatma Jyotirao Phule had established three schools by the year 1852, but these schools were closed by the year 1858 due to paucity of funds after the rebellion of the year 1857.
● Jyotirao opposed the orthodox beliefs of Brahmins and other upper castes and termed them as 'hypocrites'.
● He established an ashram for young widows and supported widow remarriage.
● In the year 1868, Jyotirao decided to build a communal bath outside his house, showing his sense of belonging to all human beings, also, he started eating food with members of all castes .
● He started a public awareness campaign which later influenced the ideologies of Dr. BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi.
● Died: November 28, 1890

● Hindi story writer Phanishwarnath 'Renu' was born on March 4, 1921 in a village named Aurahi Hingna in Purnia district of Bihar.
● He participated in the 'Quit India movement’ of the year 1942.
● He also played an active role in the anti-Ranashahi movement of Nepal.
● Renu was a supporter of progressive ideology in politics.
● In the year 1953, he came in the field of literary creation and he did writing work in various literary genres like story, novel and essay.
● He has depicted the life and atmosphere of the “Anchal” by making the basis of his creations, resorting to ‘Anchalic’ vocabulary and idioms.
● Due to his deep human sensitivity, he himself seems to suffer the helplessness and suffering of the needy people. Along with this sensitivity, his belief is also connected that within today's afflicted human being, immense power is hidden to change his life-condition.
● Thumri, Aginkhor, Adim Ratri Ki Mehek etc. are his famous story-collections.
● A film has also been made on Teesri Kasam urf Mare Gaye Gulfam story. Maila Aanchal and Parati Parikatha are his notable novels.
● Phanishwarnath 'Renu' is an eminent story writer of independent India. Renu gave a new identity and gesture to Premchand's legacy through his creations.
● With many important novels like ‘Maila Aanchal’, 'Parati Parikatha', Renu gave birth to a new tradition of Hindi fiction, different in its craft and taste.
● In Renu's stories, poignant places of public life have been identified by the use of ‘Anchalic’ words. His language is sensitive, communicative and emotional.
● Phanishwarnath 'Renu' died on April 11, 1977.
