-> State of Judicial Infrastructure in India

- Underutilized Funds: Out of the total funds sanctioned in 2019-20 only around 9% was utilised by a combined five States, rendering the remaining 91.36% funds unused.

- Infrastructure vs Litigation: The total sanctioned strength of judicial officers in the country is 24,280, but the number of court halls available is just 20,143, including 620 rented halls.

- Lack of basic amenities: As much as 26% of the court complexes do not have separate ladies toilets and 16% do not have gents toilets.

- Courtrooms: Only 32% of the courtrooms have separate record rooms and only 51% of the court complexes have a library.

- Skewed Digital Infra: Only 27% of the courtrooms have a computer placed on the judge’s dais with videoconferencing facility.

- Ad-hoc and Unplanned Maintenance: Improvement and maintenance of judicial infrastructure is being carried out in an ad-hoc and unplanned manner.

Therefore there is a need for “financial autonomy of the judiciary” and hence creation of the NJIAI is highly recommended as it will work as a central agency with a degree of autonomy

✓ In News: NASA's James Webb telescope has found a star formation (Called NGC 346) in a dynamic cluster that lies within SMC.

✓ About SMC: Visible to naked eye from southern hemisphere, SMC is smaller of the two irregular galaxies that make up to Magellanic Clouds.

✓ Orbit Milky Way: These two galaxies orbit the Milky Way once every 1,500 million years, and each other once every 900 million years.

✓ Magellanic Clouds were formed at about same time as Milky Way Galaxy, approx. 13 billion years ago

SHORTCOMINGS IN E-WASTE MANAGEMENT

✓ Inability to collect e-waste as per the specified target
✓ Unauthorized dismantling and recycling units are still in function
✓ Leakage from authorized to unauthorized dismantlers & recyclers
✓ Data collected by CPCB is do not include imported e-waste figures

RECOMMENDATIONS

✓ Effective awareness would be the right step for all stakeholders
✓ Strict enforcement of the existing domestic rules and regulations
✓ Integrate formal and informal sector to reduce costs
✓ Data inventory for data analysis and to know an estimate of e-waste
✓ Publishing data in the public domain will create transparency

Vicious Trap Of Food Insecurity And Conflict

Impacts Of Violent Conflict On Food Security:

• Conflict destroys land, water, biological, and social resources for food production (challenges to SDG 2 and SDG 12).

• Violent conflicts → forced displacement→ weakening food security in both countries of origin and many host communities (hampers- SDG1, SDG2, SDG3, SDG8, SDG10 and SDG 16).

Example:

• The war in Syria, for instance, has caused more than 6 million people to flee their homes to other locations in the country→  severe food insecurity.

- As per the report of the ECI, women represent 10.5 percent of the total members of the Parliament.

- India was leading the way in the fight towards more inclusive world democracies with 5.5% women representation. (US 1.7%, UK 1.1%)

Reasons Low Participation Of Women 

- Illiteracy
- Lack of Neutral acts
- Lack of confidence and finance
- Gender Disparities
- Societal and cultural norms

Steps taken: Women parliamentarians in India

- In 2014, the then Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Meira Kumar, the Rules of Procedure of the Lok Sabha were made entirely gender neutral.

- Since then, each Lok Sabha Committee Head has been referred to as Chairperson in all documents.

International Experience

- Canada: It has guidelines for using gender-neutral language in all forms of legislation and legal documentation.

- Australia: Government has incorporated gender-neutrality in its drafting Style Manual.
