In News: International E-Waste Day is held on October 14 every year as an opportunity to reflect on the impacts of e-waste.

Slogan: ‘Recycle it all, no matter how small’

Started by: Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Forum (since 2018.)

SHORTCOMINGS IN E-WASTE MANAGEMENT

✓ Inability to collect e-waste as per the specified target
✓ Unauthorized dismantling and recycling units are still in function
✓ Leakage from authorized to unauthorized dismantlers & recyclers
✓ Data collected by CPCB is do not include imported e-waste figures

RECOMMENDATIONS

✓ Effective awareness would be the right step for all stakeholders
✓ Strict enforcement of the existing domestic rules and regulations
✓ Integrate formal and informal sector to reduce costs
✓ Data inventory for data analysis and to know an estimate of e-waste
✓ Publishing data in the public domain will create transparency
