2021-05-08 12:07:15 Canada Announces New Pathway to Permanent Residence for 40,000 International Graduates

Canada has announced a new accelerated pathway to permanent residence for up to 90,000 temporary residents—with 40,000 applications earmarked for international graduates. To be eligible, international graduates must have completed an approved Canadian post-secondary program within the last four years (no earlier than January 2017). The announcement was made yesterday by the Honourable Marco Mendocino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.


Canada Wants You to Stay
“The pandemic has shone a bright light on the incredible contributions of newcomers,” said Minister Mendocino. “These new policies will help those with a temporary status to plan their future in Canada, play a key role in our economic recovery and help us build back better. Our message to them is simple: your status may be temporary, but your contributions are lasting—and we want you to stay.”

Applications can be submitted starting May 6, 2021 and will remain open through November 5, 2021, or until capacity has been reached. An application can be made under one of the following streams:

- 20,000 applications for temporary workers in healthcare
- 30,000 applications for temporary workers in other selected essential occupations
- 40,000 applications for international students who graduated from a Canadian institution

In an effort to promote Canada’s official languages, there are also three additional streams for French-speaking and bilingual applicants. There is no intake capacity for these streams. This is a unique opportunity for international students from several French-speaking nations such as Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.


International Graduate Stream Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the international graduate stream of this accelerated pathway to permanent residence, applicants must:

- Have completed an eligible Canadian post-secondary program at an approved designated learning institution (DLI) within the last four years, and no earlier than January 2017.
- Be employed in Canada with a valid permit or authorization to work.
- Be currently living in Canada with valid temporary resident status.
- Meet other eligibility requirements.
Complete eligibility requirements for the international student stream, as well as the essential healthcare workers and other essential occupations streams, can be found on IRCC’s website.


Canada’s Ongoing Commitment to International Students
Yesterday’s announcement is the latest in a series of steps IRCC has taken over the last year to support international students studying at Canadian educational institutions during COVID-19, including:

- Welcoming back international students studying at a DLI with a government-approved COVID-19 readiness plan.
- Enabling international graduates with a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) that has expired or will expire soon to apply for a new open work permit through July 27, 2021.
- Allowing international students unable to study in-person in Canada due to COVID-19 travel restrictions to complete their entire program online from outside Canada and remain eligible for a PGWP. Eligible studies include those in progress in March 2020 until December 31, 2021. ओपन / कमेंट

2021-05-08 12:01:16 Pick Up Biometric Residence Permit Within 90-Days of Arrival

All students must get a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). A BRP is used to confirm a student’s:

- Identity
- Right to study in the UK
- Right to any public services or benefits

Under normal circumstances, if a student applied for a BRP from outside the UK, they would typically pick it up from either a post office branch or their sponsor within 10 days of arrival. Due to COVID-19, this timeframe has been extended to 90 days, enabling students to pick up their BRP after completing their quarantine period. 2021-05-08 12:01:16 Travel Information for Students Entering the UK from India and Other Red List Countries

On Friday, April 23 at 4:00 AM GMT, India will be added to the Red List* of countries on the United Kingdom travel ban. However, international students studying in the UK can still enter from or through a Red List country as long as they comply with the following guidelines outlined in this blog post. As always, students studying in the UK are encouraged to visit GOV.UK for the most up-to-date information on COVID-19 travel restrictions.

*Angola, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Burundi, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Eswatini, Ethiopia, French Guiana, Guyana, India (as of Friday, April 23 at 4:00 AM GMT), Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Oman, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Qatar, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Suriname, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Uruguay, Venezuela, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Before Travelling to the UK
Prior to travelling to the UK, students entering through or from a Red List country must:

Take a COVID-19 Test
All travellers must take a COVID-19 test within three days of departure, even if the traveller has had a COVID-19 vaccine.

Accepted COVID-19 tests include:

- A nucleic acid test, such as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test or a test using derivative technologies, including loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) tests
- An antigen test, such as a test from a lateral flow device

The test can be presented as a physical document, email, or via an electronic device, and must include:

- The traveller’s name (matching the name as it appears on the travel documents)
- Date of birth or age
- The result of the test
- The date the test sample was collected or received by the test provider
- Test provider name and contact information
- Confirmation of the device used for the test, or that the test was a PCR test
Travellers must present their negative COVID-19 test before boarding and will be denied boarding without it. More information can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Book Two COVID-19 Tests
Travellers will be required to book two additional COVID-19 tests to be taken on or before day two and again on or after day eight of the mandatory 10-day quarantine. The cost is included in the traveller’s managed quarantine package (more information below).

Please note that travellers will require the booking reference numbers for these tests before completing their passenger locator form.

Complete the Passenger Locator Form
Travellers must complete the passenger locator form online at any time 48 hours prior to travelling to the UK. The information will be used to contact the traveller in the event “someone [they] travelled with develops coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms.” The completion of this form is mandatory.

Before filling out the passenger locator form, travellers should have the following at hand:

- Passport details
- Travel details, including dates and times
- The address where the traveller will stay in the UK
- The booking reference numbers for the two COVID-19 tests the traveller must take after entering the UK
- The invoice number for the quarantine hotel booking
A QR code will be sent by email and can be printed or displayed on a mobile phone as proof of completion.

Book a Managed Quarantine in a Hotel
Travellers must book a 10-day/11-night managed quarantine package, which includes:

- The hotel stay
- Food and beverages
- Transfers
- Security
- Two COVID-19 tests

Travellers can only make a reservation for a government-approved managed quarantine facility 14-days before arrival. Reservations can be made through the online booking portal. The cost is £1,750 for one adult, and £650 for each additional person staying in the same room.

After Entering the UK
Travellers must adhere to the following guidelines upon entering the UK:

Work placements are a requirement for some courses and earn students academic credit. Students typically complete a work placement during term time.

Short-term work placements range in length. Some are completed over the summer holidays and are usually between one and three months, while others are one day per week over a longer duration.

For some courses, such as science and engineering degrees, students must participate in a “year-in-industry” work placement. Also known as a “sandwich course,” this work placement is a year in length and occurs during a student’s second and final year.

Although short-term work placements are generally unpaid, students participating in a “year-in-industry” placement will receive compensation.

United Kingdom institutions to consider: Coventry University, Nottingham Trent University, and the University of Hertfordshire.


United States
International students in the United States have two options for gaining work experience while studying: Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT). Students must complete their first year before they are eligible for one of these programs.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) gives students the opportunity to participate in off-campus training, work experience, or an internship, as outlined in their degree program. For some degree programs, completing a CPT internship is a program requirement that students will need to fulfill before graduating.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows students to find off-campus employment or an internship within their field of study. Students enrolled in a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program can also take advantage of an OPT extension. International students interested in participating in OPT will need to apply for an additional visa.

There are two types of OPT available to students:

Pre-Completion OPT allows students to gain experience in their field of study before graduating and entering the workforce. Students can work up to 20-hours per week while studying, and up to 40-hours per week when on a break, such as during summer vacation.

Post-Completion OPT allows students to work at a job within their field of study for up to 12 months after graduating.
