NATO nations cannot reach a compromise on the extent of the alliance's military expansion in Eastern Europe.

The Washington Post reports, citing alliance documents.

"The Baltic states and Poland are demanding a significant expansion of the military presence on their territory and new capabilities, such as air defense assets, that would help make a potential Russian invasion much more difficult," the newspaper wrote.

Amid these requests, a number of other alliance members, such as France and Italy, have expressed skepticism about Russia's ability to pose a credible threat to the allies in the foreseeable future.
