World Environment Day History

At the conference, the right to live in a healthy environment was declared as a basic human right.

The Stockholm Conference formalised the idea of World Environment Day. Each year, a different country hosts the event.

It also witnessed the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme.

India hosted the 45th World Environment Day in 2018. The theme for that year was ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.

Celebrations for World Environment Day last year kicked off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) — a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from the farmlands to forests, the top of mountains to the depths of the seas.

• The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, commonly known as the Non-Proliferation Treaty or NPT, is an international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament
• The NPT is often seen to be based on a central bargain: “the NPT non-nuclear-weapon states agree never to acquire nuclear weapons and the NPT nuclear-weapon states in exchange agree to share the benefits of peaceful nuclear technology and to pursue nuclear disarmament aimed at the ultimate elimination of their nuclear arsenals.”
• The treaty defines nuclear-weapon states as those that have built and tested a nuclear explosive device before 1 January 1967; these are the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and China.
• Four other states are known or believed to possess nuclear weapons: India, Pakistan, and North Korea have openly tested and declared that they possess nuclear weapons, while Israel is deliberately ambiguous regarding its nuclear weapons status.
• The Treaty has 189 States Parties, which is the largest number of any arms control agreement.
• However, India, Israel and Pakistan have not signed the NPT.
• North Korea announced its withdrawal in 2003, and further announced that it had conducted an underground nuclear explosion in 2006 and 2009.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Helicopter Division started manufacturing helicopters in 1962, by entering an agreement with France for production of Aloutte III helicopters (Chetak). 

The helicopter was originally called Aloutte III and was renamed to Chetak — after the legendary horse of the 16th Century Rajput ruler Maharana Pratap — for the Indian Armed Forces.

The first Chetak in ‘Fly Away’ condition was delivered in 1965. 

The Chetak Helicopter is a two ton class helicopter. The helicopter has a range of 500 kilometres and a top speed of 185 kilometres per hour.

The seven seater Chetak helicopter is versatile, multi role, multipurpose, and spacious.  

The helicopter is suitable for commuting, cargo / material transport, casualty evacuation, Search & Rescue (SAR), Aerial Survey & Patrolling, Emergency Medical Services, Off-shore operations and Under slung operations. 

The Chetak is used by all three services — the Army, Navy and Air Force — as well as the Coast Guard.

Till date, HAL has produced and sold more than 350 of these versatile Helicopters which are in service both in India and abroad.

2022-06-01 05:31:50 Well-known Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, died in Kolkata. He was 53.

Born in New Delhi to C S Menon and Kunnath Kanakavalli on August 23, 1968, KK reportedly had a short stint as a marketing associate in the hotel industry after which he shifted to Mumbai to pursue a career in music. @militarychoiceblog

In 1994, he took a chance and gave a demo tape to Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot and Leslie Lewis. After working on several jingles over the next few years, he was introduced as a playback singer with A R Rahman's hit song 'Kalluri Saaley' and 'Hello Dr.' from Kadir's 'Kadhal Desam' and then 'Strawberry Kannae' from the musical film 'Minsara Kanavu'.

Finally, in 1999, he made his debut as a Bollywood playback singer with 'Tadap Tadap' from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'. Though, prior to this, he had sung a small portion of the song 'Chhod Aaye Hum' from Gulzar's 'Maachis'.

The Kalvari class submarine is based on Scorpene-class submarines built for the Indian Navy with diesel-electric attack capacity.

Defence Ministry of India approved Project-75 in 1997 that allows Indian Navy to acquire 24 submarines.

What are the Scorpene-class submarines?

The Scorpene-class submarines are extremely potent platforms.

Scorpene-class submarines have advanced stealth features and are equipped with both long range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles.

Scorpene-class submarines have a state-of-the-art SONAR and sensor suite permitting outstanding operational capabilities.

Present status of Six Scorpene-class Submarines under Project 75:

INS Kalvar: It was launched in October 2015 and was commissioned in December 2017 – five years behind schedule.

INS Khanderi: It was launched in January 2017 for trials and commissioned in September 2019.

INS Karanj: It was launched in January 2018 and commissioned on March 10, 2021.

INS Vela: was launched in May 2019 and inducted recently.

INS Vagir: It was launched in November 2020 and has commenced harbour trials. It is expected to go for its maiden surface sortie in December 2021.

INS Vagsheer: It is in the advanced stage of outfitting.
