Fatehpur Sikri established during the 2nd half of the 16th century by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Sikri (the City of Victory) was the capital of the Mughal Empire for near about 10 years. The series of monuments and temples are in a uniform architectural style, it includes one of the bigget mosques in India, the Jama Masjid. Akbar, transfered his residence and court from Agra to Sikri to honour the famous Sufi Saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, who resided here. #GKbyMilitaryChoice

Facts about Fatehpur Sikhri:

1 Fatehpur Sikri is a city in the Agra District of Uttar Pradesh. Previously name of city was Vijaypur Sikari (Sikarwar Rajput clan) later the city was established in 1569 by the Emperor Akbar.

2 Akbar gave it the name of Fathabad and which in later days known as “Fathpur Sikri”

3 Agra served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585. After his military victories over Chittor and Ranthambore, Akbar decided to transfered his capital from Agra to a new location the Sikri ridge, to honour the Sufi saint Salim Chishti.

4 Babur visited this place on the eve of the Khanwah battle in A.D. 1527 and named it ‘Sikri’ in his Memoirs. He founded here a garden and a Jal-Mahal surrounded by the lake-water and a baoli (step-well) to commemorate his victory in the battle of Khanwah.

5 Sikri was the first planned city of the Mughals.

6 The city (Sikri) has some various buildings such as Jami masjid, Ibadat Khana(House of worship) Buland-Darwazah(in the memory of Gujarat victory) and tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti; Khass Mahal, Shahi-Bazar, Mina-Bazar, the Panch-Mahal, Khwabgah, Diwan-i-Khass, Anup-Talao, Chaupar and Diwan-i-Am and Birbal's House.

7 Just because of easy availability of sandstone in the neighbouring areas of Fatehpur Sikri, red stone is used in all the buildings made here.

8 Fatehpur Sikri set up on rocky ridge, 3 kilometres in length and 1 km wide and palace city is surrounded by a 6 km) wall on three sides with the fourth bordered by a lake.

9 Its architects were Tuhir Das and Dhruv Chawla. It was constructed using Indian principles.
