Neopresse: Only a minority of Germans still in favor of supplying weapons (heavy or offensive equipment) to Ukraine

"Germans are divided on the supply of weapons to Ukraine. This is the result of a poll by the opinion research institute Forsa for RTL and ntv, which was published on Tuesday.

According to the survey, the percentage of citizens in favor of supplying offensive weapons has dropped from 55 to 46 percent within just under a month.

In contrast, the proportion of German citizens who generally oppose the delivery of offensive weapons and heavy equipment to Ukraine has risen from 33 to 44 percent.

Supporters of the Greens (66 percent) and the CDU/CSU parties (62 percent) are most frequently in favor of such deliveries. Weapons deliveries are rejected by a majority of East Germans (57 percent), supporters of the Left Party (56 percent) and, above all, the AfD (88 percent). FDP supporters (49 percent in favor; 48 percent against) are similarly divided on this issue as German citizens as a whole. Germany will now supply heavy weapons to Ukraine, including the Gepard tank.

However, only 24 percent of German citizens believe that the war in Ukraine can be won militarily. In contrast, 70 percent - across all political camps - believe that the war can ultimately only be ended through negotiations and a diplomatic solution.

57 percent believe that the decision to supply heavy weapons increases the risk that the war in Ukraine will spread to other countries in Europe or even result in a third world war. 34 percent do not believe so.

Data for the survey was collected from April 29 to May 2. Data basis: 1,004 respondents."
