◇ Kolleru Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in India located in state of Andhra Pradesh and forms the largest shallow freshwater lake in Asia,

◇ Kolleru spans into two districts Krishna and West Godavari.

◇The lake is fed directly by water from the seasonal Budameru and Tammileru streams, and is connected to the Krishna and Godavari irrigation systems by over 67 major and minor irrigation canals.

◇ This lake is a major tourist attraction. Many birds migrate here in winter, such as Siberian crane, ibis, and painted storks.

◇ The lake was an important habitat for an estimated 20 million resident and migratory birds, including the grey or spot-billed pelican (Pelecanus philippensis).

◇ The lake was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in November 1999 under India's Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, and designated a wetland of international importance in November 2002 under the international Ramsar Convention.

◇ Sasthamcotta Lake or Sasthamkotta Lake, also categorized as a wetland, is the largest fresh water lake in Kerala.

◇ The lake is named after the ancient Sastha temple (a pilgrimage centre) located on its bank.

◇ It meets the drinking water needs of half million people of the Quilon district and also provides fishing resources.

◇ The purity of the lake water for drinking use is attributed to the presence of large population of larva called cavaborus that consumes bacteria in the lake water.

◇ The lake is a designated wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention since November 2002.

◇ The Sambhar Salt Lake, India's largest inland salt lake, is located 80 km (50 mi) southwest of the city of Jaipur and 64 km (40 mi) northeast of Ajmer, Rajasthan.

◇ It surrounds the historical Sambhar Lake Town.

◇ Roopkund (locally known as Mystery Lake or Skeletons Lake) is a high altitude glacial lake in the Uttarakhand state of India.

◇ It lies in the lap of Trishul massif.

◇ Located in the Himalayas, the area around the lake is uninhabited and is roughly at an altitude of 16,470 feet (5,020 m),[surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad mountains.

◇ Roopkund is a popular trekking destination.

◇ The size of the lake varies substantially, but it is seldom more than 40 meters in diameter (1000 to 1500 square meters in area), and is frozen in the winter.

◇ Pushkar Lake or Pushkar Sarovar is located in the town of Pushkar in Ajmer district of the Rajasthan state of western India.

◇ Pushkar Lake is a sacred lake of the Hindus.

◇ The Hindu scriptures describe it as "Tirtha-Guru" – the perceptor of pilgrimage sites related to a water-body and relate it to the mythology of the creator-god Brahma, whose most prominent temple stands in Pushkar.

◇ The Pushkar Lake finds mention on coins as early as the 4th century BC.

◇ Pulicat Lagoon is the second largest brackish water lagoon in India, after Chilika Lake.

◇ Pulicat Lagoon is considered to be the second largest brackish water body in India measuring 759 square kilometres.

◇ The lagoon is one of the three important wetlands to attract northeast monsoon rain clouds during the October to December season in the Tirupati Region.

◇ The lagoon comprises the following regions, which adds up 759 square kilometres according to Andhra Pradesh Forest Department: 1) Pulicat Lake. 2) Marshy/Wetland Land Region. 3) Venadu Reserve Forest. 4) Pernadu Reserve Forest (AP).

◇ The lagoon was cut across in the middle by the Sriharikota Link Road.

◇ The lagoon encompasses the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary.

◇ The barrier island of Sriharikota separates the lagoon from the Bay of Bengal and is home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

◇ Major part of the lagoon comes under Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
