It cannot be large countries normally. Why? Because, large countries will probably have more than one developmental core. It leads to the development of more than one major cities. So chances for rising of a primate city seldom seen.

Primate city

The concept was developed by?
Mark Jefferson.
In the year? 1939.

He developed his theory of primate city after the analysis of rank size rule of Zipf.
Rank size distributions tend to occur in large countries, countries with a long history of urbanization, and countries that are economically and politically complex.

Primary distribution tend to be found in small countries those with the short history of urbanization, those with similar economic and political structures, and those at the centre of colonial empires.

All the capitals of South America excepting Brasilia(Brazil), and all the capitals in Africa excepting Abuja(Nigeria) are the primate cities.

The capitals of small countries in general are the primate cities.

in India at the national level there is no primate city but at the regional level Srinagar is a primate city in the valley of Kashmir. Kolkata is a very good example of regional primate City.

Rank size rule was popularised by??
Zipf.
In the book? National unity and Disunity
In the year? 1949

How do we have calculate rank or population of a city, according to rank size rule??

It is simple.

Population of nth ranked town =
population of largest town / rank of town.

Suppose we need to calculate population of 10th largest town in a region. Population of the largest town is 1,00,000.

Then population of 10th ranked town is;

1,00,000/10 = 10,000.

Shortly;
Population of nth town is: 1/nth size of the largest town.

Mumbai is the only Alpha city from India.
There is no Alpha++ and Alpha+ cities from India.

Every few years, important global economic cities are ranked by the Globalization and World Rankings Research Institute (It is based in the geography department of Loughborough University in Leicestershire, United Kingdom). It is considered the leading institute ranking the world’s cities.

It is not developed countries but in developing countries.

A megacity is a metropolitan area with a population of 10 million or more than 10 million.

the vast majority of megacities are located in the developing countries. Out of the 23 mega cities 13 are in Asia, 4 in Latin America, 2 in Africa, 2 in North America and 2 in Europe.

Conurbation;
The term conurbation was coined by Patrick Geddes in his book 'cities in evolution.'
Conurbation is a contiguous urban area formed by the coalescence of several million cities.

There are several conurbations in the world.

Patterns of rural settlements.

1. Rectangular pattern.
2. Linear pattern
3. Circular and semi circular pattern
4. Star like pattern
5. Triangular pattern
6. Nebular pattern

1. Rectangular pattern;
About 50% of the world population lives in rural settlements and most of the people inhabit the settlements of a rectangular pattern.
Mainly developed in fertile alluvial plains and wide intermontane valleys

2. Linear pattern;
Either sides of road, railway line, river or canal

3. Circular and semi circular
Mainly coastal regions.

4. Star like pattern;
Where Several roads converge. This pattern is common to both villages and towns.

5. Triangular pattern;
Generally at the confluence of rivers.

6. Nebular pattern;
Here the arrangement of roads is almost circular which ends at the centre location.
In villages it is developed around the mosque, temple, or church.

Compact rural settlement

Rural settlements are generally classified into three;
1. Compact or nucleated settlements
2. Semi compact or semi nucleated settlement
3. Dispersed settlements

1. Compact settlements:
The main reason of compact settlement was the basic human need to communicate and co operate with others.
Compact settlements are mostly found in the highly productive alluvial plains. (Remember gangetic plain).

2. Semi Compact or semi nucleated settlements;
This is a transitional phase in the growth of compact settlement. As the new technologies adopted, and the population increases, the scattered settlements start taking the shape of semi compact settlements.

3. Dispersed settlements;
This type of settlements are generally found in the areas of extreme climates, hilly tracts, forests, grasslands, poor agricultural lands.
Areas of extensive cultivation is one of the most important spot of dispersed settlement.
