Why 1911-21 is known as Great Dividing line or demographic divide? Simply, when we divide something there will be different portions with different features. We divided Indian Demographic history into two as, the period of slow or negligible population growth and the period of accelerating population growth. We marked 1911-21 as the dividing period, because, it is after 1921, India witnessed a regular-gradual increase in the population growth.

In short, The population growth rate was very slow before 1921, but it gradually kept on increasing after 1921.

Further, 1911-21 is the only decade in the demographic history of India when the population showed a negative growth rate.
