Sunken WW2 German warships discovered near Belgrade as Danube water level retreats

Sunken WW2 German warships and boats became visible in the Serbian part of the Danube, near the village of Prahovo on Friday, as the water level continued to fall.

In total, around 20 wrecks were exposed, with the river at one of its lowest levels in nearly a century, due to the severe drought.

Hundreds of ships from the German Black Sea fleet were sunk in the river during the Soviet advance in 1944.

Many of them still contain dangerous cargo such as ammunition and explosives.
