Mahanadi is a major river in
East Central India. It
flows through the states of
Chhattisgarh and
Odisha.
The river
originates from Sihawa in Chattisgarh and
Drains near False point in Odisha, Bay of Bengal Tributaries :
Left - Seonath, mand, Ib, Hasdeo
Right - Ong, Parry, jonk, Telen
The
Mahanadi was notorious for its devastating floods for much of recorded history. Thus it was called '
the sorrow of Orissa'. The
famous Hirakud Dam and reservoir is
built on this river near Sambalpur in odisha.
Chattisgarh and Odisha are in dispute over sharing of the Mahanadi river water and Mahanadi river dispute tribunal has been set up by the cental government.
