On June 7 2021, the Imam of a mosque, Nasir Mohammad, and worshippers were brutally beaten by Hindu extremists inside the prayer hall of the mosque in Rampur Majra village, Dankaur, Greater Noida. An exaggerated fear, hatred, and hostility toward Islam and Muslims are perpetuated by negative stereotypes resulting in bias, discrimination, and the marginalization and exclusion of Muslims from social, political, and civic life.

Islamophobia existed in India before also, but it increases in frequency and notoriety since the BJP came into regime. Initially, Islamophobia was defined as ‘an unfounded hostility toward Islam, and therefore fear or dislike of all or most Muslims’. However, there is no full agreement on what ‘Islamophobia’ refers to. Whereas, The term ‘Islamophobia’ itself is rather misleading: it literally refers to the fear of a religion, while in fact it is a fear of Muslims and a hostility legitimized because they adhere to Islam.

Zakir Ali Tyagi, independent journalist and vice president of rights group NCHRO has been booked by Uttar Pradesh police under the Goondas Act.

The case is registered in Parikshitgarh Police Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut on 25 April this year. 22 year old Tyagi who hails from Meerut, was not aware about the case until after two police officers informed him the case details on 23 June, three months after registering the Goondas Act.

Tyagi said to Maktoob that he was framed by UP Police after his organisation National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) filed complaints against custodial deaths in the state to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

An elderly Muslim man was lynched in Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. The slain was identified as Khurshid Ahmed, 50, a resident of Gharhakhurd village in Kotwali area.

Anwar, Khurshid’s younger brother told Maktoob that it was definitely a case of mob lynching. “He was lynched because he had a beard, and wore a religious cap”, he said, adding that the brutal assault took place in an area dominated by Pandits and Thakurs.
