The FMR, put into effect in 2018, permits inhabitants along the India-Myanmar frontier to cross 16 kilometers into the neighboring nation's land without the need for a visa.

Reason : recent surge in migration due to the conflict in Myanmar, and the Indian government's intention to only allow those with valid documentation to enter India post the reevaluation of the FMR.
