"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Nick Carraway moves to Long Island and becomes neighbors with Jay Gatsby, a wealthy and mysterious man who is known for throwing lavish parties.

Nick is invited to one of Gatsby's parties and meets Daisy Buchanan, a beautiful woman who is married to a man named Tom.

Nick learns that Gatsby was once in love with Daisy and that he made his fortune through illegal means.

Gatsby reveals his hope that Daisy will leave Tom and reunite with him, and Nick agrees to help him by inviting Daisy over for tea.

Daisy and Gatsby reunite and have an affair, but Daisy ultimately decides to stay with Tom.

Tom becomes suspicious of Gatsby and Daisy's relationship and confronts them.

In the ensuing confrontation, Tom reveals that Gatsby's fortune was made through illegal means and that he was a bootlegger during Prohibition.

Tom's mistress, Myrtle, is accidentally killed by one of Gatsby's cars.

Gatsby is killed by Myrtle's husband, who mistook him for the driver of the car that killed his wife.

Nick attends Gatsby's funeral, which is attended only by himself and Gatsby's father. The novel ends with Nick reflecting on the emptiness of the American Dream.
