Timeline of E-Governance in India
➢ 1970 - The establishment of the Department of Electronics in 1970 was the first major step towards e-governance in India as it brought ‘information’ and its communication to focus. ➢ 1977- National Informatics Centre (NIC) established in 1977, launched the District Information System program to computerize all district offices in the country ➢ 1987 - The main thrust for e-governance was provided by the launching of NICNET in 1987 – the national satellite-based computer network. ➢ 1997- National Conference on E-Governance (NCeG) started by Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG ) along with Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, in association with the State/UT Government. ➢ 1998 - A National Task Force on Information Technology and Software Development was set- up. ➢ 2000 - The Information Technology Act (2000) was enacted. This Act was amended in 2008. ➢ 2006 – National E-governance Plan (NeGP) was launched by the Government of India to make all government services available to the citizens of India via electronic media. NeGP was formulated by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) and Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG). ➢ 2015 – National E-governance Plan (NeGP) 2:0 or e-Kranti was introduced by the government in under the Digital India program to utilise emerging technologies such as cloud, mobile platforms (like smartphones and tablets) and geospatial information systems.
