Tatya Tope
● Tatya Tope, popularly known as Ramchandra Pandurang, was born in the year 1814 in Nashik district of Maharashtra.
● His father, Pandurang Rao, was a nobleman in the court of Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao II.
● Tope became acquainted with Peshwa's adopted son Nana Saheb and both became close friends.
● He was also an ally in the revolt of 1857 against the British.
● Tatya Tope adopted the surname 'Tope' which means - Commanding Officer.
● Despite having no formal training in fighting skills, Tope was a brilliant fighter and master of the art of guerrilla warfare.
● In the Revolt of 1857, Tatya Tope, Rani Lakshmibai from Jhansi, Khan Bahadur Khan from Bareilly, Kunwar Singh from Jagdishpur in Bihar, Begum Hazrat Mahal from Lucknow, Liaquat Ali from Allahabad, Azimullah Khan from Fatehpur and Maulvi Ahmadullah from Faizabad led the revolt.
● He took an active part in the rebellion in Kanpur and then in Gwalior, where he came to the aid of Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi.
● He captured Kanpur with remarkable skill in 1857 AD, however, in the Second Battle of Kanpur, the British forced Tope to retreat.
● Later he went to meet the rebels in Gwalior.
● The Raja of Narwar sided with Man Singh for some time but the Raja had bad relations with the ruler of Gwalior and the British were able to take advantage of this.
● Mansingh cheated and because of this Tope was arrested from the forest area of Paron.
● The British presented him in a court in Shivpuri.
● Tatya Tope was one of the foremost leaders of the Revolt of 1857 whose valour and courage still inspire Indians.
● Tatya Tope, the rebel leader of the Revolt of 1857, was hanged by the British on April 18, 1859.
