● Syama Prasad Mukherjee was born on July 6, 1901, in Calcutta in a Bengali Brahmin family.
● Dr. Mukherjee obtained his bachelor's degree from Calcutta University in the year 1921.
● He did MA in the year 1923 and BL in the year 1924.
● He was an Indian politician, barrister and educationist who served as the Minister of Industry and Supply in the cabinet of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
● In the year 1934 at the age of 33, Syama Prasad Mukherjee became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.
● In 1946, he demanded the partition of Bengal to prevent its Hindu-majority areas from being incorporated into Muslim-majority East Pakistan.
● In 1947, he also opposed an unsuccessful bid for a united but independent Bengal made by Subhash Chandra Bose's brother Sarat Chandra Bose and Bengali Muslim politician Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy.
● He founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), the predecessor of the modern Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
● In 1953, he tried to enter Kashmir without permission in protest against the special status given to Kashmir and was arrested.
● He died under mysterious circumstances on 23 June, 1953 while in custody.
