World Environment Day
❖ World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment.
❖ This program was started in the year 1972 to spread awareness about the bad environmental conditions and its increasing side effects.
❖ Currently it has become a global platform to discuss the problem of pollution and is organized in more than 100 countries.
❖ The theme of Environment Day for the year 2023 is "Solutions to Plastic Pollution" and its global host is Cote d‘Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
❖ In the year 2018, India hosted the international event of World Environment Day with the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
❖ The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 defines air pollutant as any solid, liquid or gaseous substance present in the atmosphere, which may be harmful to humans or other living beings or plants or property or environment.
❖ Air Pollution is responsible for a quarter of all deaths due to heart attacks and a third of all deaths due to stroke, respiratory diseases, lung cancer.
❖ Around 92 percent of people around the world are forced to breathe polluted air. The Expenditure on health due to air pollution puts a burden of $5 trillion on the global economy.
❖ Due to Ground-level ozone pollution crop yields are expected to decrease by about 26 percent by the year 2030.
❖ India drafted and launched the National Clear Air Program-NCAP, which aims at prevention, control and abatement of air pollution besides enhancing air quality monitoring network.
❖ Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 established the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at the apex level and State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) at the state level to control the improvement in air quality and a provision has been made to advise the government on any matter related to eradication of Air Pollution.
❖ The CPCB also sets standards for air quality and provides technical assistance and guidance to the State Pollution Control Boards.
