World Telecommunication & Information Society Day
Every year on May 17, 'World Telecommunication & Information Society Day' (WTISD) is organized all over the world.
The day aims to raise awareness about the significant changes being brought about in societies and economies by the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ITC).
This day is organized as an amalgamation of 'World Information Society Day' and 'World Telecommunication Society Day'.
'World Telecommunication Society Day' marks the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in the year 1865, while 'World Information Society Day' marks the foundation of the 'World Summit on the Information Society' (WSIS) Focuses on the importance of ITC and wider issues related to the information society.
In the year 2006, the United Nations decided to jointly organize both the days together every year.
The theme of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day for the year 2023 is 'Empowering the least developed countries through information and communication technologies'.
