Sikkim Foundation Day
● Sikkim's foundation day (16 May) took place on 16 May 1975 as the 22nd state of India.
● Sikkim is located in the eastern Himalayas, in the north-eastern part of the country and is one of the smallest states in India.
● Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim.
● The state is bordered by China's Tibet Autonomous Region to the north and northeast, Bhutan to the southeast, the Indian state of West Bengal to the south, and Nepal to the west.
● Sikkim became a protectorate of India in 1950 following the Indo-Sikkim Treaty, in which India assumed responsibility for Sikkim's external relations, defense and strategic communications.
● Namgyal dynasty ruled Sikkim till 1975.
● Its name is derived from the Limbu (a tribe) word Su Him, which means 'new home'.
● India's highest peak and the world's third highest mountain 'Mount Kanchenjunga' is situated in Sikkim.
● Kangchenjunga National Park (established in the year 1977), the largest of India's high-altitude conservation areas near the peak.
● Kangchenjunga National Park was designated a World Heritage Site in the year 2016 under the category 'Mixed' (site containing elements of both natural and cultural significance).
● Sikkim is of great political and strategic importance to India due to its location along several international borders.
