National Technology Day
Every year on May 11, 'National Technology Day' is organized all over India.
On this day India successfully tested nuclear bombs at Pokhran on May 11, 1998.
The nuclear missile was tested at the Indian Army's Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. This was the second test conducted after Operation Smiling Buddha at Pokhran-I in May, 1974.
India successfully tested its Shakti-1 nuclear missile in an operation named Pokhran-II, known as 'Operation Shakti', which was led by the then President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
The day was first observed on May 11, 1999, with the aim of commemorating the scientific and technological achievements of Indian scientists, engineers. The day was named by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
India's first indigenous aircraft 'Hansa-3' was also tested in Bengaluru on 11 May itself.
India also conducted successful firing test of Trishul missile on the same day.
Every year the Indian Technology Development Board (a statutory body under the Ministry of Science and Technology) celebrates this day by conferring National Awards on individuals for their contribution to science and technology in India.
Technology Development Board is a statutory body of the Government of India which functions under the Department of Science and Technology.
It provides financial assistance to Indian industries and other agencies for commercialization of indigenous technologies or adaptation of imported technologies for wider domestic applications.
