Maharaja Karni Singh was born on April 21, 1924 in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
Karni Singh started shooting under the tutelage of his father, Late Maharaja Shardul Singh.
Karni Singh was educated at St. Stephen's College, Delhi and St. Xavier's College, Bombay and did his Ph.D. from Bombay University. The topic of his thesis was 'The Relation House of Bikaner with Central Powers from 1465 to 1949'.
Karni Singh also presented the memorable moments of his shooting in the form of a book, named- 'From Rome to Moscow'.
He was a member of the Parliament from the year 1952 to the year 1977.
Karni Singh won the National Championship in 'Clay Pigeon Trap and Skeet' competition for 17 years.
He represented India in competitions at the international level and also won the 'Silver Medal' in the World Championship.
Karni Singh was the first shooter of the country, who was honored with 'Arjuna Award' for the first time in India in the year 1961.
The Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range near the historic Tughlaqabad Fort in Delhi is named after him.
He died on September 4, 1988.
