World Liver Day is organized every year on 19th April to create awareness about the importance of liver and its related diseases.
The activities organized on this health awareness day are organized in association with various international and local governing groups.
World Liver Day focuses on activities related to educating people about the seriousness, early detection and prevention of liver diseases.
Being the second largest and most important organ in the human body, liver performs many functions which include metabolism, digestion, immunity, filtration of toxins and storage of vitamins, minerals, glucose etc but not limited to it only.
It has unique feature of self-healing, where it can regress or regenerate after being damaged up to 60 to 70%, any abnormality in the liver can lead to serious health complications.
The theme of World Liver Day for the year 2023 is "Be Vigilant, Do Regular Liver Check-Up, Fatty Liver Can Affect Anyone".
The theme focuses on stressing on the practice of regular liver check-up.
Recent studies in India have shown that 75% of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD; liver disease) is seen in patients who drink little or no alcohol with a low body mass index (<25 kg/m2)
