7 golden tips for beginners in UPSC preparation!

1. Be clear about your 'WHY?' - Why do you want to become IAS/IPS/IFS? This clarity is needed - without it you won't get motivation to study 8-10 hours on consistent basis for years.

2. To begin with, have absolute command over syllabus and PYQs - syllabus will show you what to read and PYQs will guide you to what depth you should read

3. Avoid shortcuts - in pursuit of shortcuts you will end up months/years in your prep phase. Eg. Don't run behind toppers notes - learn to make your own notes.

4. Start with NCERTs - get the basics right. Spend time on getting basic conceptual understanding of all subjects - then move on to know the details/depth

5. Choose your optional carefully. Choose optional which is performing well in UPSC, which you love, which have enough guidance available. Eg. For most cases, avoid optionals like Physics, Maths, Engineering etc.

6. Focus on your mental and physical health from day 1 of preparation - exercise and meditate on daily basis. Write diary, give time to your hobby etc.

7. Make it a habit to read newspaper and learn to know the issues. It's a herculean task - but it'll give you much needed leverage over others.

Bonus tip - Be ready with Plan A+ (exit plan). No matter how intelligent & hardworking you are - this exam is unpredictable.

So be clear about number of years you are gonna devote to this exam + what to do in case you don't make it
