Photochemical Smog
Today, most of the smog we see is photochemical smog. It is visible as a brown haze in densely populated cities.
Photochemical smog is produced when ultraviolet light from the sun reacts with nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere, forming airborne particles and ground-level ozone.
Nitrogen Oxides(NOx) come from automobile exhaust, coal power plants, and factory emissions.
VOCs are released from gasoline, paints, and many cleaning solvents.
