◇ Wheat is the
second most important cereal crop in India after rice. India produces about
12% of the total wheat production of the world and is the
second largest producer after China.
◇ It is primarily a crop of temperate zone. Hence, its cultivation in India is done during
winter i.e., rabi season.
◇ The total area under the crop is about 29.8 million hectares in the country. The production of wheat
in the country has significantly increased from 75.81 million MT in 2006-07 to an all-time record high of 94.88 million MT in 2011-12.
◇ In terms of export, India ranks much behind countries like Russia and U.S.A. as most of its production is consumed internally.
