RICE

#Agriculture #Foodcrops

◇ Rice is a staple food for the overwhelming majority of population in India.

◇ In India rice is grown in 43.86 million ha, the production level is 104.80 MT, and the productivity is about 2390 kg/ha (Agricultural Statistics at a glance-2015).

◇ India ranks second in the world in terms of volume of rice produced but its productivity is low compared to the productivity levels of any countries in the world.

◇ Also, about 90% of the cultivated land belongs to Marginal, Small and Medium farmers which is another constraint in increasing the productivity of rice in the country. Hence, there is ample scope to increase the productivity of rice
in the country

◇ India is the leading exporter of rice in the world. During 2015-16, the country has exported globally about 40.45 lakh MT of Basmati rice and 63.66 lakh MT non-basmati rice. Also, India exports rice mostly to the Arab region (Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE, Iran and Kuwait).
