India officially recognizes esports as a legitimate sport

The Government of India announced that eSports (Electronic sports) will now be a part of multi-sports events and will be overseen by the Department of Sports under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India. Online gaming, on the other hand, will be under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY).

The director of the Esports Federation of India has stated that the proper infrastructure, training facilities, and coaching will be put in place to support the country's young esports athletes. It is only a matter of time before esports is placed on the same level as traditional sports like cricket, football, and basketball, with similar fan power and popularity.

The year 2023 is expected to be the start of a golden era for esports in India, with the Asian Games and Olympic Esports Week set to take place. Esports will also be making its debut at the postponed Asian Games in Hangzhou, China as a medal event after being a demonstrative sport in 2018. In November 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that the inaugural Olympic Esports Week will take place in Singapore between June 22 and 25 in 2023.
