There are a number of tests which separate the components of fresh concrete and test for a variety of mix properties; however, none are as yet accepted by any standard.

There are some tests that do not require separation of the components of the concrete:

Thermal Conductivity -
Increase in water slows temperature rise.

Capacitance Test -
Higher water content, increases dielectric constant.

Electrical Resistance -
Electrical resistance of fresh concrete is inversely proportional to the water content.

Nuclear Methods -
X-rays, gamma-rays, and neutron activation analysis can be used to measure the cement and water contents.

The analysis involves three principles of mechanics.

Equilibrium of internal forces with the external loads. The compression inconcrete (C) is equal to the tension in the tendon (T). The couple of C and T areequal to the moment due to external loads.

Compatibility of the strains in concrete and in steel for bonded tendons. Theformulation also involves the first assumption of plane section remaining planeafter bending. For unbonded tendons, the compatibility is in terms of deformation.

Constitutive relationships relating the stresses and the strains in the materials.
