US warns Turkey against relations with Russia
The Biden administration has warned Turkish businesses that they could be sanctioned if they do business with Russian institutions and individuals, the Wall Street Journal reported.
In an Aug. 22 letter to the American Chamber of Commerce in Turkey, US First Deputy Treasury Secretary Adewale Adeyemo said Turkish companies are at risk of US sanctions if they do business with people from Russia.
"Relationships with sanctioned Russian citizens and organizations may result in Turkish financial institutions and businesses being sanctioned," the letter states.
The letter also makes special reference to Russian banks. In particular, Turkish banks that maintain correspondent relationships with Russian banks will be prohibited from having relationships with American banks.
At the moment, Turkey is the only NATO member country that has not supported the international sanctions imposed against Russia.
