Important Facts About the National Food Security Mission

The National Food Security Mission (NFSM) is a completely Central Sponsered Scheme of the Government of India as per the guideline of the 11th Five-year plan during the year 2007-08 to increase the production of rice, wheat, and pulses on a sustainable basis so as to ensure the food security of the country. The aim is to bridge the yield gap in respect of these crops through the dissemination of improved technologies and farm management practices.

National Food Security Mission (NFSM) scheme is implemented by the GOI as per the guidelines line of the 12th Five-year plan during the year 2014-15.

Coarse cereals were also included in the Mission of NFSM from 2014-15.

Objectives of the National Food Security Mission

Increasing production of rice, wheat, pulses, coarse cereals (Maize) Commercial Crops (Cotton and Sugarcane), and Nutri-Cereals (Jowar, Bajra, and Ragi) through area expansion and productivity enhancement in a sustainable manner in the country.
Restoring soil fertility and productivity.
Enhancing farm-level economy to restore confidence amongst the farmers.
Increase the post-harvest value addition for better price realization to farmers through efficient market linkage.

NFSM is sub-divided into the following Components:

National Food Security Mission – Rice (NFSM-Rice)
National Food Security Mission – Wheat (NFSM-Wheat)
National Food Security Mission – Pulses (NFSM-Pulses)
National food Security Mission - Coarse cereals (NFSM-Coarse cereals)
National Food Security Mission – Nutri cereals (NFSM- Nutri cereals)
National Food Security Mission – Commercial crops (NFSM-Commercial crops)
National Food Security Mission – Oilseeds and Oilpalm (NFSM-Oilseeds)
National Food Security Mission – Seed village program
