•  Full Stop (.) – Usually used at the end of a sentence.
Eg-  She was wearing a beautiful dress.

• Question Mark (?) – Usually used at the end of an interrogative sentence to form a question.
Eg-  Who composed this song?

•  Comma (,) – Usually used to denote a pause in a sentence.
Eg- I bought a beautiful dress, a purse and a pair of shoes.


•  Exclamation Mark (!) – Used to denote shock, surprise, anger or a raised voice.
Eg- Hurray! We won.

•  Colon (:) – Used to indicate what is to follow next.
•Eg-  Verbs that do not take ing form: See, look, hear, exist, own etc.

• Semi Colon (;) – Used to link two independent clauses not joined by a conjunction or used to separate two independent clauses in place of comma.
Eg-  My wife likes tea; I prefer coffee.

•  Apostrophe (‘) – Used to show possession or for contraction of word.
Eg- This is a woman’s t shirt.

•  Hyphen (-) – Used to glue words together.
Eg- He stayed in a five-star hotel.

•  Slash (/) – Used to separate letters, numbers or words.

Eg-Sarah had a strange/weird habit.

•  Ellipsis Mark (…) It is the omission of one or more words, which must be supplied by the listener or reader for the sentence to be understood.
Eg- "I am sorry, he is ....." Teena said.
She meant that he was no more.

•  Round Brackets () – Used to add extra information in a sentence.
Eg- Mt. Everest (in the Himalayas) is the highest peak in the world.

•  Quotation Mark (” “) – Used to show that someone else has said it.
Eg- I am fine,” he said.
