#GS3 #InternalSecurity #NE Reasons For Isolation of NE 1. Pre-Independence: Britisher saw in NE as huge
potential to tap
natural resources &
exploit it commercially. They gave NE a
special admin status & followed deliberative policy of excluding outsiders [
isolate NE] but allowed
christian missionaries to
move in, making NE society relatively
progressive. This also, helped Britishers in keeping
nationalist influence out of tribal areas.
2. Partition Blow to NE: The
creation of
East Pak after Partition virtually disconnected NE region from
RoI with only link being
narrow 22* km Siliguri corridor [chicken neck].
3. Post-Independence:
a. Geographical Isolation
b. Per capita income
c. Education
d. Agriculture
e. Aid curse
f. Lack of Industrialisation
g. Top Down Planning - Use of one-size fits all approach.
-
6th schedule of
Indian Constitution provided
high degree of
self-governance through
autonomous district councils.
