Electoral Ethics and Legal Provisions Against Communal Campaigning

Section 123(3) & 123(3A) of RP Act, 1951: These sections codify the prohibition against appealing to voters on the grounds of religion, race, caste, community, or language, and label such acts as corrupt electoral practices. They also penalize the promotion of enmity or hatred on these grounds during elections

Model Code of Conduct (MCC): Although not legally binding, the MCC sets forth norms for political conduct, deterring parties and candidates from exploiting caste, religious, or linguistic differences(Abhiram Singh vs. C.D. Commachen (2017)- includes any religious appeals in the context of elections, even those related to the religion of the voters.
