The day Pele ‘stopped’ a war in Nigeria
In January 1969 during the Nigeria Civil war Brazilian club Santos visited the country to play friendlies with the Nigerian football team, then known as the Green Eagles.
The warring sides decided to suspend hostilities for 48 hours so that they could watch the friendly matches, the first played in Lagos and the second in Benin.
According to Santos’ official website, the then state Military Governor Samuel Ogbemudia declared a public holiday and opened up the bridge that connected Benin with Biafra and about 25,000 fans went there to witness Pele playing football.

The Christmas truce football match
A series of unofficial cease-fire along the Western front of WW-1 was known as the 'Christmas truce'. It is believed that German and British soldiers stopped the war and played football in no man's land in the year 1914 during Christmas. There has been no actual photograph of soldiers playing football there, but from the war letters historians assume the game was played. Nevertheless, this remains a heart warming story for the football community, they stopped the war and chose to play football.

The dog who found the stolen World Cup trophyIn 1966 FIFA World Cup held in England, the original World Cup trophy was stolen during a public exhibition in Westminster, the robbery occurred on 20th March 1966, four months before the kickoff of the tournament.
